Location of surge tank
The surge tank is located between the almost horizontal or slightly inclined
conduit and steeply sloping penstock and is designed as a chamber excavated in
the mountain. The surge tank is generally installed either at the lower end of
a pressure tunnel to link pressure tunnel to the penstocks or lower end of a
long penstocks leading from dam to isolated power house. Surge tanks may also
be provided at upper end of long tailrace diversion system. The height of the
surge tank is governed by the highest
possible water level that can be expected during operation.
